The 150th anniversary of Alessandro Manzoni's death offered the opportunity to propose an original reinterpretation of the author's literary imagination within new perimeters and perspectives. The "horrible scourge" of Manzoni's plague – a narrative engine capable of evoking powerful literary figures and a merciless observatory on the moral, social and political vulnerability of humanity – he sees intertwining and confused, between living and writing, the greatness and fragility of Manzoni, man and man of letters, in the face of the dramas of existence. Around the creative forge of I Promessi Sposi and the History of the Infamous Column, which constitutes its narrative cornerstone, the exhibition and the catalog selectively explore a millennial time span,that from Greco-Roman antiquity reaches the present day, retracing the drama of epidemic evil in history, in its multiple transpositions and in diversified languages (literary, iconographic, musical).

With the scientific contribution of authoritative experts, the catalogue offers itself as a tool to deepen the linked links that the plague, Manzoni's theme par excellence, is still able to arouse, in particular in light of the dramatic experience of the recent Covid-19 pandemic.
